Poems For Women

One thing about me is that writing poetry is how I heal, how I escape and how I make sense of the world. These are a handful of poems I wrote for women, mums, girls, the ones whose hearts have been broken and mended, who have been put down by medical systems, who have found comfort in each other...

Sometimes I think we don’t matter to them,

Until we are just a body,

Until the life has drained out of us,

Perhaps even then,

They will shake their heads at the girl who wasn’t strong enough,

Who just didn’t try hard enough.

Be patient with yourself,

People do not heal overnight,

You wouldn’t expect that of broken bones,

So don’t expect that of your mind.

Maybe love is not saying,

Everything will be okay,

But saying,

I will still be here if it’s not.

And so the women in my life gather around me,

Pick up the pieces I no longer have the strength to find,

Press steady hands to my broken body,

Hold the life inside me,

And slowly,

The healing begins.

-        Women have always been my saviour.
